'Celebration' After the Harvest — original mixed media still life painting by Tasmanian artist Jeanette Cocker

The Story Behind ‘Celebration’ After the Harvest

There is a particular kind of joy that only comes after effort. Not the easy pleasure of something handed to you, but the deep, earned satisfaction of fruit that follows hard work. That’s the feeling at the heart of my painting, “Celebration” After the Harvest.

The Idea Behind the Painting

The harvest has always been one of humanity’s most powerful metaphors. You prepare the ground, you plant, you tend, you wait — and only then, after all of that patient, unglamorous work, does the fruit appear. The celebration that follows isn’t just about the abundance on the table. It’s about everything that came before it.

I wanted to capture that moment of arrival. The rich purples of the grapes, the warmth of wine, the sense of a table set not just with food but with meaning. This is a still life, but it’s not a quiet one — there’s a vibrancy to it, an aliveness, that I hope you can feel.

Working in Mixed Media

As with all my work, Celebration is painted in mixed media on cotton gallery wrapped canvas. I love what mixed media allows — the layering of texture and colour that gives a painting its depth and warmth. The deep purples and rich tones in this piece were built up gradually, each layer adding to the sense of abundance and fullness.

The finished piece is 12” × 12”, painted on cotton gallery wrapped canvas, and comes ready to hang.

What I Hope It Brings to Your Home

I think of this painting as a reminder — one worth having on your wall. That the good things in life are worth working for. That celebration is not frivolous; it’s necessary. And that beauty, like fruit, is the reward for patience and care.

Whether you’re a collector of original Australian art, or simply someone who wants their home to hold a little more meaning, I hope Celebration speaks to you.
